Today we are going to talk about fishes. Here’s the colouring activity.
Here are some conversation tips for this colouring exercise:
“Why do fishes live in the water?” (Fish do not have lungs like we do; they have gills which only work well underwater.)
What songs do you know about fish?”
“Is a Shark/dolphin/whale a fish?” (Yes/no/no)
How do fishes float? (Swim Bladder)
Can you float?
Do you have a swim bladder? (No)
Do you like fish?
Do you think a fish would make a good pet?
Below is a science experiment that we would like you all to do with your children over the weekend.
Science exercise
Float or Sink
Equipment
Large bowl (eg a basin)
Objects to test:
Wooden pencil, metal spoon,
plastic spoon or fork, silver coin,
nail or screw, wooden close clip,
ice cube, apple,
birthday candle, potato
glass marble, can opener
Two labels, “Sinks” and “Floats”
Method
Place the large bowl on the ground or on a low table co that your child can put things in it.
Place the ‘Sinks’ label to the right of the bowl. Read the word to your child and point to the label.
Place the ‘Floats’ label to the right of the bowl. Read the word to your child and point to the label.
Fill the large bowl with water (above 4 inches; 10 cm)
Put the objects to test within reach of the child.
One by one, lift each object to test and ask your child, “Will this sink or float?”
After your child answers [do not prompt or guide your child, let the answer be the child’s],
let him take the object and place it gently on the top of the water and let it go.
Note whether it floats or sinks and say either, “It floats,” or “it sinks.”.
Choose the next object and continue.
When you are finished show your child the objects that float and those that sink before clearing the
bowl’
Have your child place the items that floated next to the ‘Floats’ label and the items that sank, next to the ‘Sinks’ label.
Comments
Do not tell your child what is to be done with the objects until you are ready to start the exercise.
Let your child discover; do not tell or suggest what the result may be.
Encourage your child to say aloud “the —– floats” or :the —– sinks” after each test.
Get as many of the objects listed above or similar objects. At least ten.
If you take pictures, we would love for you to post them below in to comments. Thank you!
For more on fishes, here is a good video that you can leave to play in the background or watch with your children. It is just reef footage but it’s very good. (You don’t have to watch the full 2 hours =p ) I might show them a bit today.
