Social Distance Learning Day 3

Today we are going to talk about fishes. Here’s the colouring activity.

Here are some conversation tips for this colouring exercise:
“Why do fishes live in the water?”  (Fish do not have lungs like we do; they have gills which only work well underwater.)

What songs do you know about fish?”

“Is a Shark/dolphin/whale a fish?”   (Yes/no/no)

How do fishes float?    (Swim Bladder)

Can you float?

Do you have a swim bladder?   (No)

Do you like fish?

Do you think a fish would make a good pet?

Below is a science experiment that we would like you all to do with your children over the weekend.

Science exercise

                                                                                       Float or Sink

Equipment
Large bowl (eg a basin)
Objects to test:
Wooden pencil, metal spoon,
plastic spoon or fork, silver coin,
nail or screw, wooden close clip,
ice cube, apple,
birthday candle, potato
glass marble, can opener

Two labels, “Sinks” and “Floats”

Method
Place the large bowl on the ground or on a low table co that your child can put things in it.

Place the ‘Sinks’ label to the right of the bowl. Read the word to your child and point to the label.

Place the ‘Floats’ label to the right of the bowl. Read the word to your child and point to the label.

Fill the large bowl with water (above 4 inches; 10 cm)

Put the objects to test within reach of the child.

One by one, lift each object to test and ask your child, “Will this sink or float?”

After your child answers [do not prompt or guide your child, let the answer be the child’s],
let him take the object and place it gently on the top of the water and let it go.

Note whether it floats or sinks and say either, “It floats,” or “it sinks.”.

Choose the next object and continue.

When you are finished show your child the objects that float and those that sink before clearing the
bowl’

Have your child place the items that floated next to the ‘Floats’ label and the items that sank, next to the ‘Sinks’ label.

Comments
Do not tell your child what is to be done with the objects until you are ready to start the exercise.
Let your child discover; do not tell or suggest what the result may be.
Encourage your child to say aloud “the —– floats” or :the —– sinks” after each test.
Get as many of the objects listed above or similar objects. At least ten.

If you take pictures, we would love for you to post them below in to comments. Thank you!

For more on fishes, here is a good video that you can leave to play in the background or watch with your children. It is just reef footage but it’s very good. (You don’t have to watch the full 2 hours =p ) I might show them a bit today.

Social Distancing Learning Session Day 2

Yesterday we spoke about butterflies and how some of them use their long tongues to eat nectar. Today we are going to look at the flowers that make the nectar.
Remember to ask your kids about what they learned yesterday regarding butterflies. This will encourage reflection and exercise their memories.
Here is a flower that can be printed and coloured.

While your child is colouring, chat with them about flowers. Here are some ideas you can use.

“What colour will you colour the petals/leaves/stem/seeds?”

“Where are its roots?”

“Why are flower’s colourful?”   (To attract birds and insects)

“What is Nectar?”    ( Nectar is something sweet that the plant makes.)

“How does Nectar help the plant?”    ( It attract birds and insects.)

“What is pollen?”   (A small powder that plants use to make seeds)

“How do butterflies help the plant?”   (Butterflies, birds and other insects carry pollen from one flower to other flowers. This helps make seeds.)

“What are seeds for?”  (Seeds grow into new plants; to perpetuate the species)

“What do you think nectar tastes like?”

“Would you eat a flower?”

“What are flowers good for?”       (They help makes plants which give us food and oxygen. They are nice to look at. They smell nice. They feed animals.)

TODAY’S PROJECT
Find three pictures of different coloured flowers.
Find three pictures of animals who eat nectar.

Well this is day two of our quarantine classes. Keep up the good work everyone.

Today our talk is going to be about butterflies!

Here is the colouring sheet for today, feel free to print it out and let your child colour it. While they colour it converse with them about butterflies.

Suggested interactions:
“I like/dislike butterflies because x”
“Was a butterfly born as a butterfly?”     (No, it was born as a caterpillar)
“What colours will you use for your butterfly?”
“Why do butterflies have patterned wings?”         (To camouflage or frighten other animals)

“What does camouflage mean?”     (To hide by looking just like something else. eg. looking like tree bark, looking like  a leaf)

“Why do butterflies have dust on their wings?”     (The ‘dust’ ((Not dust)) is there to help them absorb heat from the sun so they can be warm enough to fly)

“What do butterflies eat?”   (Most of them eat nectar, some eat dead animals, some eat tree sap)
“Do all butterflies eat?”        (No some butterflies don’t eat, they survive on the food that the caterpillar ate)

“How to they eat it?”          (With their super long tongues)
“Do butterflies drink water?”   (Yes, caterpillars don’t but butterflies do. )

Come up with your own questions and comments for them. Consider going outside and trying to spot a butterfly.

TODAY’S PROJECT:

“Take a picture of something that you think a butterfly would have for breakfast”

Letting them take the picture themselves would be best.

If any of you do not have access to flowers, tree sap or detritus, look for a picture online. Let them decide what words to search for and let them select the best picture.

2018 Registration

Zenith is opening its doors for registration. Call us at 739-3503 or 747-4105 to arrange a visit or secure your spot with us for 2018.

Hey everyone. Zenith Preschool is a newly opened Preschool in Couva. We are located where the Couva Private Grammar school used to be; next to the Couva Home for the Aged and walking distance from the Exchange Primary School. We’re open for Registration and we’re trying to spread the word as much as possible.

So far we’ve found tons of parents interested in our curriculum, staff and facilities (more information on all of those can be found here on this site). The main draw back has been our small class sizes. We have to admit that this surprised us a lot. Small class sizes is one of our selling points. Instead of your child getting 1/30 of their teacher’s attention, they will be developing their individual student teacher relationship with our staff. This is an irreplaceable advantage for your child; it should be enough to convince you to try us out.

And to those unconvinced, we get it. We too are aspiring to have our classes grow (a little). Let me assure you that for September 2018 we intend on having 10-20 new students. Businesses take time to grow, as do reputations. Aunty Kitty and I (Christopher) have spent most of our energy building a reputation in North Trinidad where we live. Now that we’re here in Couva, we’ll start over again and share with this community our gifts in education. Word has been spreading about our unique methods, friendly and capable staff and amazing campus. If you are ready to be convinced, let us start by sharing with you, our facilities.

There’s so much here for you and your children to see. The first thing most kids notice is the trampoline. Once they get over that they may find the two-storey playhouse or the table full of instruments or maybe they’ll find the costume basket. We at Zenith Preschool have worked hard to create a rich, inviting and enlightening environment. Once you’ve seen us, you’ll know that this is a place of learning and growing, a notch above the rest. We look forward to seeing you all and we’re excited to have our small family grow with you.

Preschool Craft ideas

Tomorrow is Father’s Day so you know it’s craft time again! Here’s a neat idea you can add to your cards or even use as your card. Follow the video with your preschooler and work along with them for a hand-crafted, heart-filled token of love and affection. Personalise with buttons or pockets (or coffee stains) and use pretty papers to match dad’s timeless style.
